Title

2003 quest. - Summary of question 30 responses

Request

Question 30 from the "questions" document: For manufacturing, do you consider coding option B (creating a new set of Manufacturing subcategories) an option that you would support for a revised ISIC? -see section 5 of the paper

Discussion

Decision

Summary of responses to question 30 (Coding options for Manufacturing) Out of the 41 countries that commented on this question, 21 (mostly European countries) responded, that they 'support a 2-alpha and 4 digit numerical code' - also for Manufacturing. It is unclear whether the proposed 2-alpha code (as in NACE) should be interpreted as an argument for the intermediate level for Manufacturing, since the proposal was to have 5 or 6 (intermediate) Manufacturing subsections, while NACE would still have 14 2-alpha codes in Manufacturing. There were 15 countries in favour of manufacturing subcategories, while 4 opposed it (Japan, India, Australia, Honduras) and the US was neutral, since they wouldn't use the ISIC coding structure. Action required: Depends on the interpretation of most of the European answers and the decision on the coding structure in general. Besides the 21 Europeans, countries preferred a more aggregated intermediate structure for Manufacturing.
