6. In ISIC Rev.3, Division 50 was introduced for the various selling and repairing activities related to automobiles. Is there any value to this approach? Should it be retained for the next revision?
Discussion
Decision
This question was answered by 36 countries or organizations, of whom the biggest group (fourteen) favoured maintaining Division 50, in contrast to 10 countries that were clearly opposed to the current approach. The rest were either neutral or imprecise in their statements. Those countries that did not appreciate the current approach wanted automobiles to be treated like other commodities (see current treatment as an inconsistency in the classification scheme). There were suggestions to move parts of the current Division 50 into the Wholesale/retail trade division and the Manufacturing Division according to the main issue of the activity - or create of a new "Repair and maintenance" section. Those defending the current approach warned that the distinction between wholesale and retail trade in the automobile sector could become very difficult, if Division 50 were split. Several countries have suggested the creation of a separate aggregation for "Repair activities".
